(SJS) Stevens-Johnson syndrome and TEN (toxic epidermal necrolysis) are severe immune reactions. There is a concrete link between these reactions and certain medications as well as particular infections. Only 1 to 2 in a million per year gets affected by these diseases. The symptoms include quick illness, severe pain, and loss of skin and mucous membranes. It also has long-term effects with problems related to the eyes, skin, breathing, and stomach. However, this study looks at the psychological impact of SJS and TEN on a patient.
SJS and TEN’s overlap, and their impact on a patient’s mind get critically appraised. Researchers analyzed the existing research and applied the results in a clinical scenario. Seven different published electronic databases were the primary data. The study focused on patients who were over 18 and psychologically impacted by the disease.
The results of six studies satisfied the inclusion criteria. The patients complained of fear, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The results highlighted the lack of knowledge of the healthcare practitioners to aid the patients.
The study concluded the overlap of SJS and TEN. The evidence also clearly indicated a psychological impact on the patient. Follow-up visits and support were the primary suggestions for treating the patients’ anxiety and reducing the risk of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) development.
