Study investigators suggest that incident stroke appears to be associated with an acute decline in cognitive function. Incident stroke also appears to accelerate cognitive decline over 6 years. The study, which involved patients aged 45 and older without baseline cognitive impairment, demonstrated that stroke was associated with declines in new learning and verbal memory.
