- Results from a survey on patient bias toward doctors and nurses and participants’ experiences directly with, or witnessing, race-based microagressions from patients, colleagues, or support staff and how they handled these situations.
- Study results indicating that the minority pay gap in medicine is real and what can be done to close the gap across racial/ethnic lines, including resources or support to help negotiate fair pay.
- Study results indicating that implicit racial bias can affect the diversity of medical school admissions and what steps are or can be taken within individual organizations to address implicit bias and increase minority representation.
- Participants’ experiences with the representation of minorities in their academic, hospital, or society leadership, whether they are able to affect change, and whether there is upward sponsorship of other minorities.
- Participant’s experiences, or lack thereof, with visible minority role models in medicine in their community who are supporting and mentoring minority medical students.
- How to get professional societies to objectively review inclusion data for underrepresented minorities and commit to address and close gaps in diversity, inclusion and equity.
- National minority medical association, including their benefits and potential barriers to participation.
- Participant’s experiences with how requests or medical orders from minority physicians are handled by staff compared with non-minority peers with similar levels of training or experience, and how these issues can/have been addressed.
- Barriers to getting engaged and advocating for more minority representation in medicine, and success stories about techniques to overcome these barriers.

How to Join the Chat
- Log into your Twitter account. Don’t have an account? Where have you been?! Just kidding, we don’t judge, but you should get one! It’s easy to create, and free. You’ll be glad you did.
- A couple minutes before 3:00pm ET on June 20, Search Twitter (top right of every Twitter page) for #PWChat.
- On the search results page, click Latest at the top left. This will show you all the latest tweets using the #PWChat hashtag. The page will automatically update every couple minutes, letting you know how many new tweets there are using the #PWChat hashtag.
- Answer questions, reply to other’s comments, or make a comment of your own as much and as often as you like. Just make sure to leave room in include #PWChat to make sure what you tweet is included in the chat. Otherwise, it won’t be seen.

About Dr. Marcelin
Jasmine R Marcelin, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases and the Associate Medical Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
She is also the mother of two, wife of Dr. Alberto Marcelin, an advocate for Diversity and Inclusion in Medicine, and is passionate about medical education and using social media as a platform to achieve both of these goals. She is one of the co-administrators of the UNMC ID Blog and social media accounts.
