The white population is susceptible to skin neoplasms. Sunlight exposure is a significant cause of such disorders. Sun Protection programs raise UV exposure awareness. Educational initiatives at the kindergarten level can teach sun safety. In this study, the effects of such interventions get studied for new insights and innovations.
The SunPass project got implemented at 55 German KG schools. Educational lectures, site inspections, and certifications were a part of the program. Data observations at the sites included UV index, date, aptly dressed kids, and shaded area percentages. The intervention lectures focused on sunlight awareness and behavioral changes. Questionnaires and staff surveys emphasized cancer risks and sun-protection practices. The descriptive statistics and predictive analysis were the tools used.
A total of 5424 children were a part of this program. The intervention significantly improved their sun protection behavior (P < 0.001). About 22.2% of parents reported 1 to 5 sunburns since the birth for their children. Demand for protective clothing also increased very significantly (P <0.001). However, sunscreen usage in KG schools did not alter.
The program achieved only some of its objectives. It was not successful in conveying precise information regarding sunscreen use or skin types. But the brief interventions improved sun protection awareness in early childhood.
