TUESDAY, Oct. 16, 2018 (HealthDay News) — The job market for new nephrologists is continuing to improve, and most fellows would recommend nephrology to medical students or residents, according to a report published online Oct. 15 by the American Society of Nephrology.
Leo Quigley, M.P.H., from the George Washington University Health Workforce Institute and School of Nursing in Washington, D.C., and colleagues surveyed American Society of Nephrology members. Four hundred seven fellows or trainees responded to the survey.
The researchers found that three themes emerged from the 2018 survey. There was a continued trend of steady improvement in the job market for new nephrologists: 38.0 percent of respondents reported having difficulty finding a satisfactory position compared with 45.6 percent in 2017; salaries increased for U.S. medical graduates (USMGs) and international medical graduates (IMGs), with fellows’ anticipated salaries higher in 2018 than in previous years. The job market was significantly better for USMGs than IMGs, who represent the majority of trainees. Finally, lifestyle concerns, including frequency of overnight calls, weekend duties, and length of each workday, are important to fellows and may be of concern to fellows and residents who do not select the specialty. Most fellows (78.8 percent) would recommend nephrology to current medical students and residents.
“Among nephrology fellows who had searched for a job, perceptions of local nephrology job opportunities maintained the improvement of recent years,” a coauthor said in a statement.
