The purpose of this study is to describe developments in urologic surgical training during the last 5 years. Many techniques have been developed to objectively assess surgical abilities and give structured feedback to urologic trainees. To aid the development of surgical skills outside of the high-stakes operating room environment, a number of simulation methods have been used. Three-dimensional printing has been utilized to generate low-cost, high-fidelity dry-lab models. Non-technical abilities, such as collaboration and decision-making, have received more emphasis. Structured surgical video review has been demonstrated to improve surgical skills in both trainees and experienced surgeons.

In the last five years, there has been a lot of research and advancement in urologic surgical training. Despite these advancements, there is still a need for a standardized surgical training curriculum that covers both technical and non-technical abilities.
