The 2023 NACLC closing keynote—Perioperative Therapy—was given by Jonathan Spicer, MD, PhD.
2023 NACLC closing keynote speaker was Dr. Spicer, McGill University Assistant Professor of Surgery, Montreal General Hospital, at which he holds the titles Dr. Ray Chiu Distinguished Scientist in Surgical Research; Advanced Thoracic and Upper GI Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program Director; Rossy Cancer Network Lung Cancer Disease Site Lead Attending Surgeon; and Division of Thoracic and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, MUHC.
Born and raised in Montreal, Dr. Spicer completed his BS at McGill University where he continued his medical training and earned his MD. He then moved to Vancouver to complete his surgical internship at the University of British Columbia. The following year, Dr. Spicer returned to McGill to complete his general surgical training, earning a PhD in Experimental Surgery while participating in the Surgeon Scientist and Clinical Investigator programs as a Fonds de recherche du Québec-funded student.
Dr. Spicer completed his cardiothoracic surgery training at University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. His clinical interests focus on minimally invasive approaches to lung cancer as well as complex resections for advanced thoracic malignancies. He pairs his clinical focus with a comprehensive research program in cancer metastasis. Dr. Spicer’s laboratory studies the link between inflammation and metastasis with a particular focus on neutrophil and circulating tumor cell interactions, and his research interests include neutrophil-based mechanisms of cancer metastasis, inflammation and cancer; thoracic malignancy clinical trials; airway surgery; and thoracic trauma.
