Results of a study published in International Wound Journal indicate that among patients with severe burns, those with an abnormal BMI appear to have a higher mortality rate than those with a normal BMI. The researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. The analysis included six studies and a total of 16,154 patients with burns. While the association between BMI and mortality in patients with burns was not statistically significant, a linear dose response in three studies suggested a 5% rise in mortality for every 5 kg/m² increase in BMI. Though insignificant, mortality did increase from percentile 10 to 50, whereas the increased in mortality rate from percentile 50 to 90 was statistically significant. “The results of the study indicated BMI can increase the chance of mortality by 0.19, although it was not significant,” wrote the study team.
