IP – ischemic pariapism’s adverse outcomes have a positive correlation to the time of presentation. The study aims to understand the delay of presentation in accordance with the patient education about IP outcomes and risks.

The study used IP patient charts between 2010 and 2020 to review the factors. One episode of IP per individual is added for analysis. The researchers identified 123 individuals with IP. The typical etiologies are trazodone (16%), erectogenic intracavernosal injection (24%), and psychiatric medicines (16%).

Individuals with intracavernosal injection and sickle cell anemia based IP had a shorter time to present than psychiatric medication and idiopathic cases. Provider education on the risks was correlated with presentation time greater than 24 hours. However, after multivariate analysis, the study concluded that the lack of education to the provider has a positive association with presentation time more than or equal to 24 hours.

Men who receive education on UP risk related to medication sought prompt attention. Thus, the chances of surgery requirement reduced. Hence, healthcare providers should offer educational initiatives on IP risk for individuals consuming medicines associated with IP risks. Moreover, the study also showcases a limitation of conducting a retrospective chart study at one institution.
