ASRS Founders Award
Johanna M. Seddon, MD, ScM, FARVO, FASRS, professor, interim chair and residency program director of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, and director of the Retina Service at UMass Memorial Medical Health, Worcester, Massachusetts, is the recipient of the 2023 ASRS Founders Award. Dr. Seddon is receiving the award for her major contributions to the advancement of vitreoretinal surgery, treatment, research, and patient care.
The Founders Award was first presented in 1997 to honor the efforts of the Society’s founders, Drs. Jerald A. Bovino, Roy A. Levit, and Allen Z. Verne, for their foresight, dedication, and leadership in establishing the Society as an open, democratic, worldwide organization dedicated to the advancement of vitreoretinal surgery and the study of vitreoretinal diseases.
The Packo Service Award
The ASRS has chosen Timothy G. Murray, MD, MBA, FASRS, founding director and CEO of Ocular Oncology and Retina in Miami, Florida, as the winner of the 2023 Packo Award in recognition of his exceptional service to the Society.
The Packo Award is named in honor of its first recipient, ASRS 2001-2002 President Kirk H. Packo, MD, FACS, FASRS, whose dynamic leadership and strategic innovations helped shape and advance the Society for more than 30 years.
Dr. Murray is editor in chief of the Journal of VitreoRetinal Diseases, the official ASRS peer-reviewed scientific journal. He served as the 2019-2020 president of the ASRS and the 2020-2021 president of the Foundation. Dr. Murray has been instrumental in the Foundation’s ‘See For a Lifetime. See a Retina Specialist’ public outreach campaign. He continues to host the Foundation’s Retina Health for Life podcast, designed to educate the public about the retina’s role in making healthy vision possible, and is a co-director of the History of Retina initiative.
