The following is a summary of “Improving Adherence through Collaboration and Care Coordination in the Management of Food allergies and Asthma,” published in the September 2024 issue of Allergy and Immunology by Koplin et al.
Food allergies and asthma substantially burden individual health and healthcare systems worldwide. Although there are well-established management protocols for asthma and the promising advent of oral immunotherapy for food allergies, maintaining adherence to these treatments remains a persistent challenge for both healthcare providers and patients. This review aims to elucidate the distinct adherence requirements associated with asthma and food allergy treatments and to identify strategies to improve adherence. Researchers examine the specific demands of adhering to asthma management versus food allergy therapies, highlighting how these challenges impact treatment outcomes.
Furthermore, the review underscores the pivotal role of collaborative care coordination among healthcare professionals in enhancing adherence. By fostering integrated approaches involving various healthcare disciplines, investigators can more effectively address barriers to adherence and thereby improve patient outcomes in asthma and food allergy management.
