Several novel antimicrobials that are safer and more effective than older drugs widely used in obstetrics have been available in recent years. Obstetricians and maternal-fetal medicine experts must have a basic understanding of these agents since early sufficient broad-spectrum empiric antibiotic therapy is critical in the care of septic patients. The severely sick pregnant patient with life-threatening infection diseases is of special concern, as the inadequate initial antibiotic selection may result in increased mortality and substantial antibiotic side effects.

The goal of this article is to offer doctors a guide for selecting an appropriate empirical antibiotic prescription for the most frequent serious illnesses that might harm pregnant women.
