Nurses who work 12-hour shifts more often report poor quality of care and care left undone than nurses who work fewer hours, according to a study published in BMC Nursing. The reported rate of poor quality of care was 1.64 times higher and the rate of care left undone was 1.13 times higher for nurses working 12-hour shifts, compared with their 8-hour coworkers. Job dissatisfaction also was 1.5 times higher for nurses working 12-hour shifts compared with nurses working 8-hour shifts.
