Lung cancer screening based solely on the National Lung Screening Trial criteria appears to miss a significant number of lung cancer cases, according to findings of an international study. Investigators found that applying these criteria to patients who were known to have lung cancer missed as many as 39% of cases. However, screening patients who met these criteria or had emphysema helped detect most cancers despite reducing the number of those who were screened by as much as 52%.
